Treatment For ADHD

The main treatments for adding are medication and psychosocial therapy (psychotherapy). The medications contain stimulants such as methylphenidate amphetamine and atomoxetine. They may also be non drug treatment for adhd-stimulants, such as clonidine and guanfacine.

The use of stimulants are not recommended for patients who have active addiction issues, but they are an option for those who are in stable recovery. Combination therapy with antidepressants (particularly SSRIs) is also an option.

Stimulants

Stimulants increase the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in brain synapses. This helps improve concentration and reduces hyperactivity as well as impulsivity. Most doctors prescribe medications from the stimulant class to treat ADHD. They can prescribe methylphenidate (Concerta or Ritalin), or amphetamines. They are both similar medications. The dosage of the medicine is contingent on the biochemistry of each patient and how they react to it. It could take anywhere from five to seven days before the full effects of the medication are evident. Improvements in concentration, improved memory, better sleep and a decrease in the tendency to be impulsive are all indications that the medicine is working.

The medicines in this class may have adverse effects, including reduced appetite and difficulty sleeping, and they can increase heart rate and blood pressure. Some people who have an illness such as high blood pressure or heart disease shouldn't take these medications. The stimulants have a high risk for abuse and are closely controlled drugs. Only paediatricians, psychiatrists or neurologists, and in some situations, general practitioners may prescribe them. They are available in the form or pills, tablets, patches that go on the skin or liquids.

Children and adolescents who are dependent on stimulants are often afflicted by weight loss and eating disorders. If the dosage is excessive, they could also develop the tics. If this occurs, the doctor will reduce the dosage to avoid the drug from leading to a worsening of symptoms of untreated adhd in adults.

Around 70 to 80% children and adults with adhd treatment for adults online are treated with stimulant medications. Most children and young people experience improvement in their symptoms with treatment. This is particularly relevant for children with teachers, parents, or carers who can observe improvements.

Early use of stimulants can lower the risk of developing substance use disorders later on in life. Wilens, Katusic, and colleagues81,82 and Biederman, et al83 discovered that treatment for inattentive adhd with stimulants reduces the risk of acquiring substance addiction disorders during the adolescent period. However, this protective effect fades by early adulthood.
