Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

The blue-and gold Pixie mini macaw is a stunning bird that is known for its stunning visual appeal. Its social nature makes it a perfect companion for families. It is also extremely adept at interaction and is quick to learn new phrases and tricks.

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. They thrive in well-rounded families. They can easily become bored and find ways to keep themselves entertained if their owners are not engaging with them enough often. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive and may even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that love to play, climb and play. They must spend at least two to three hours every day outside to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not only a wonderful pet, but they are also a wonderful pet for children.

Despite their adoring nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction to those who live close by. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud calls that can be annoying for those who live in condos or apartments.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are hard to distinguish. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once sex is established pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to sea.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member and plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for 40 years. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile condition.

The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current condition. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging rapidly and her health has deteriorated.

As her captor does not have to divulge this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita Many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and perhaps be reconnect with her orca mother. Sadly, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
