How to Replace an audi a1 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not certain what to do, but i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.
