Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

Slots work the same way for every spin, so you won't be able to find any secret hacks to beat them. There are a few tips you can follow to increase your chances of winning.

Slot Efficiency

The aim of efficiency in slot machines is to maximize the amount of changes that can be made without breaking a predefined set of constraints. These constraints usually include the minimum permitted operational delay (usually expressed in terms of scheduling delays), fairness and equity access and competition, environmental goals, and more. The process of distributing slots can be a complex process, and optimizing it in order to achieve the desired performance metrics requires a thorough analysis of the variables involved.

The process starts by identifying the different types of requests to prioritize based on historical precedents. Once the type is identified, the slot allocation model is then utilized to minimize the delay criteria. However, numerous research gaps have been discovered related to the optimization of slot scheduling models, particularly when it comes to trying to balance fairness and efficiency.

A common method for prioritizing slot assignments is the ABC (assigned by velocity) strategy that gathers item history data and determines the velocity group. Items that have the highest velocity get the most trusted slots, while smaller velocity items are placed farther back in the warehouse.

The distance factor is another important element in the efficiency of slot machines. It determines the amount of space required for the pick-to-ship process. The measure considers the speed group, the placement of racking and the characteristics of handling equipment of the items.

It is also important to be aware of the costs associated with a slot change in order to increase slot efficiency. Managers can assess the costs of a typical change to a slot and its impact on other aspects of slot efficiency like velocity by analyzing a typical slot.

After spending a few months testing the data and then re-dating the recommendations, the casino started using the solution more frequently. Perimeter Efficiency

We all know wide receivers are more likely to score touchdowns when they're in a position to hit perimeter targets, rather than slot targets. This is because they are usually targeted downfield, and often are in one-on-one coverage. What may be surprising to some, however, is that the top five slot players and the rest of the group score different on targets that are outside.

Of the wide receivers that have seen at least 40 targets the past two seasons, the top five slot scorers on perimeter routes were all speed receivers: Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Tyler Lockett and Michael Gallup. The bottom half of this list is filled with receivers who are more possession-based, such as Chris Godwin and Diontae Johnston. The two latter two are likely to see a boost in their targets this season, if the Bucs shift them into the slot more often, but they'll need to improve their perimeter scoring to maintain their high standards.

The slot is the ideal option for wideouts who are quick, as they can open up more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list who can benefit from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

The last spot on the list includes more possession-based receivers that are more effective on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is expected to be the Rams main slot receiver this season is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler, meanwhile, should excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, as this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a great replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to play deep routes. It's not always a true reflection of a receiver’s skill set since certain receivers excel in the slot but don't play further.

Alshon Jeffrey, as an example is the league leader in targets received per game (4.8), but is only ranked 6th in the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets come from the outside, and it's hard to get a first down on a wide-open deep route in that situation.

Some receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. For example the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps last season, and he completed a whopping 74 percent of his slot routes compared to just 26% on boundary routes. That's a huge improvement and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Furthermore it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines inside on the majority of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also ran 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more effective when they align inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field, and are often faced with one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the other hand there are some excellent slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie leads the NFL in forced fumbles with seven, and Moore has the best tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. By deploying McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime-type packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his skills. In addition, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been an enormous benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are also good. As a group, wide receivers with a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns at roughly the same rate as those who play on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as backfield passers and tight ends.

It's also interesting to see a player like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, because he plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. In fact, he's running a higher number of slot routes than most of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup advantages for your team and helps to explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes huge plays from the perimeter too. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this list however, he's a very high-graded receiver and is a perfect fit for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player capable of putting up big numbers on both targets. He has a high slot receiving rating and is among the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also a great opponent for contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, which makes him a crucial part of his team's defense. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is a result of playing with subpar linebackers and safeties that can't match up with Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
