However unlike the i7+ or other top-rated robots we test the i3+ does not have a feature for avoiding obstacles which means it can get stuck on things like socks or power cords, and it may have trouble traversing transitions across surfaces like hardwood to rug.

iRobot recommends clearing areas that the i3+ EVO will vacuum prior to when you use it, including getting rid of any toys or clutter it might encounter. Also, keep the filters and dust bin clean to prevent them from becoming clogged. When the i3+ EVO’s internal bin is empty or the battery is low it returns to the docking station and automatically empties the dirt into the station's dust bin. Then it continues cleaning where it started. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for approximately an hour and a half continuous use, and it takes around three hours to recharge.

2. Roomba from iRobot

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in iRobot's flagship line and comes with all the latest features. It's self-charging, self-navigating, and the most crucial feature of all -- it comes with an auto-emptying dustbin, which eliminates one of the primary sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can remember up to 10 floor plans and their names with Imprint Smart Mapping, a system that allows it to identify rooms to clean them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot best home vacuum cleaner app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and direct your robot by voice or via the app.

In our tests the i7+ performed faster and more maneuverable than our second-placed model and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces kinds, including carpeting. Its greatest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying bin which eliminates the main sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot vacuum sale to start, stop or pause its cleaning sessions, move itself around the room and sweep the area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. After being connected, to give voice commands to the i7+, for example "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world full of vacuums that are cordless and are like minivans and buses, this small Dyson model is an automobile. It's powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in most homes, but also small enough to fit on a bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered with seven cells of energy-dense Lithium-ion batteries that produces power that is not fading for 60 minutes. Its sophisticated whole-machine filtration system captures allergens and expels clean air back into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles to drive deep into carpets, and then pick up large dust or crumbs. It comes with three suction modes that can be adapted to suit the task. It is able to swiftly change between handheld and floor vacuum, and vice versa.

The model also comes with docks that charge to 100% in 3.5 hours and provides an easy access to two attachments as well as an Wand clip. This is a significant improvement over previous Dysons that require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main issue with the V10 is its limited running time. As CR's tests have shown, its marketing claims of up to 60 minutes are misleading. It was able to pick up all kinds of debris in our tests and would often go over the same area many times for an efficient clean. Its flat front side helps it reach into corners and along the edges of walls and walls, which is a nice touch.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt technology to steer clear of obstacles and navigate your home. However, it isn't equipped with the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, including our top picks, the i3+EVO and the j7+ Series. Plus, you can monitor the vacuum's battery status and return it to its dock to charge at the touch of the button. The app allows you to alter the LED lights on the top of the vacuum so that you can discern where it is focusing or if it's stuck.

The app allows you to manually steer the robot, if necessary. For instance my living room rug has a darkly colored border that tends to trip up some of the other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL however was able to continue to move across the border, without notifying the edge. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving advantage.
