3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheel buggy is great for off-roading, offering the most comfortable ride for your baby. They are also easier to maneuver and push than a four-wheel buggy especially those with fabric sling seats or modular seats that are set snugly within the frame, providing the best ergonomics and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheeled buggy offers excellent stability, which is why it's an ideal choice for off road walking (especially with an all terrain or off-road style seat unit). They typically have large front tires that are able to handle bumps, kerbs and rough terrain. Some have a lockable wheel on the front to provide extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It's important to remember that 3-wheel buggies have a lower center of gravity than the 4-wheeled versions which means they could fall more easily. But, the top 3-wheel buggies have the an ideal geometry and design to make them very solid in all conditions. They must be able to pivot on a dime and be able to steer with one hand and have 360o swivelling front wheels which makes them perfect for maneuvering and navigating difficult terrain.

Look for models with pneumatic tyres. These are made to be able to navigate tracks that aren't paved and are able to withstand dirt, gravel, rocks and other debris. Many all-terrain buggies feature an adjustable front wheel that can be locked to add stability when working on extremely rough terrain.

A 3-wheel pram is also an excellent option for runners or those who prefer to walk quickly and uphill, particularly if you're planning to attach a carrycot or car seat. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a world-facing seat that reclines flat and has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your gear (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's compact, lightweight 3 wheel stroller and suitable from birth and can be used with car seats or a carrycot. It can also be used for light jogging however, it isn't designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you're looking for a buggy to tackle difficult terrain, then you should choose one with big tires. These will cope well over grass, cobbles and dirt tracks and provide a smooth ride for any passenger. They are also great for jogging because they come with built-in suspension and are able to climb up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they can be quite heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the most suitable 3 wheel buggy for use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheeler has 16 rear wheels with a lockable swivel front wheel which makes it very maneuverable. It has tyres with air that require pumping up from time to time. It can carry children until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler loved the shape of the seat and was able to steer it easily with her three-year-old in the seat.

The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another great option. It comes with an adjustable handlebar, a top-quality hood that offers 50+ UV protection and a high quality hood. It is also easy to move up and down kerbs and fits into a small car boot. It can be used as a stroller and an infant carrycot or toddlers.

Sling seats made of fabric fit snugly inside the frame of the buggie, as opposed to sitting on top of it as modular seats. This style has a lower centre-of-gravity, which is the perfect height. It is much easier to push and lighter to kerb-pop (you don't know how many times you'll do that as a brand new parent!).

Seating

The capacity for seating of 3 wheelers is impressive and there are a variety of different options to pick from. For a newborn you have the option to use the carrycot (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cozy and comfortable lying flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy) and older infants and toddlers can sit in the parent-facing or world-facing seat that is large and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. It's worth noting that the seats don't recline fully, but they can be lowered to the lowest position which will give your child plenty of headroom and room to move around.

A sling seat made of cloth is also available, which has the advantage of being positioned snugly inside the frame, rather than on top like a modular seat and this gives a lower centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push, particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs and MFM reviewer Kath was impressed with the way that this style of seat dealt with these obstacles.

Alongside a huge shopping basket, this type of buggy usually has very useful features like an extendable 50+ UV hood, an easy to use brake pedal and some games-changing visibility lights that pop up from the handlebar and can be placed in front of the passengers to improve their safety when traversing difficult terrain.

Storage

The 3 wheel stroller with bassinet-wheeled frame makes the buggy more sturdy to push one-handed and is also ideal for handling terrain that is difficult to navigate. However, it does mean that the shopping basket doesn't hold as much as a 4-wheeler buggy.

A good quality ATP will have excellent suspension, pneumatic tyres and a padded handle for your convenience. It will also be equipped to carry car seats and a carrycot which means you can use it right from the moment you are born.

MFM's reviewers have discovered that the 3-wheeler frame can't pass through all doors in their homes, or small 3 wheel stroller car boot - be sure you know the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded before purchasing if you're worried about space.

It's worth looking for a 3-wheeler that can take two (or even 3!) seats as your family grows - these are the best of both worlds and future proof your money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is among the most well-known. It can be used from day dot as a single buggy, and later transformed into twin buggies once your baby starts to walk.

Tyres

Air filled tyres are made to provide your child with an easier ride by cushioning out bumps and uneven surfaces. These are included on pushchairs such as the Phil & Ted's Sport that MFM reviewer Kath said provided "an exceptional ride for her toddler". She also said that the grippy tyres on the Phil & Ted's Sport made it simple for her to maneuver around the kerbs as well as other obstacles.

These tyres can sometimes prove difficult to maintain and need to be topped up frequently. These tyres are prone to punctures, which is why you should always have a repair kit and spare inner tube with you when you're out and about.

PU tyres are more commonly used on pushchairs since they are less expensive than tyres filled with air, but they are just as robust. You can recognise PU tyres by their matte appearance and soft feel. They also slide on flat and tidied surfaces.

If you run your hand over the tyres you can determine if they're PU or rubber. If it feels like it's moving, then it is a rubber or PU. You can also determine if your buggy is fitted with PU tyres by sliding them on an even, smooth surface. They should roll smoothly and fit comfortably into wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are typically used in high-performance buggies and Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain that's associated with this kind of pushchair. This can make your buggy less stable because the foam will lose its springy feel. Additionally, these tyres may often be noisy as they generate a lot of noise when you turn and navigate your way through the town.
