The democratic system in South Korea is vulnerable to populist impulses. It is still healthier than was expected.
The country is searching for an innovative development paradigm. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for ancestors and gendered family relationships continues to influence the way we live. There are signs that a secularist culture is gaining ground.
Origins

As Korea enters the post-crisis era its development model appears to be in flux. Those who are horrified by the enormous costs of the old systems are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of labor, 에볼루션 capital and product markets. On the other hand the supporters of the old system seek to protect it by promoting nationalist sentiments, and by exaggerating fears about possible job losses.
Policy and academic analysts are sharply divided on the extent to which these two developments are driving Koreas development towards a new model of economic governance. This article examines the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development: illiberal democracies (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877) democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also identifies some key factors that seem to be shaping these processes.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A 2009 survey revealed that nearly a third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there was insufficient evidence from science to support the theory 39% of respondents said that the theory contradicted their religion and 17% claimed it was difficult to grasp. This level of doubt is similar to that of the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from lesser advanced types of life.
In the past, the anti-evolution campaign in Korea was focused on teaching students and bringing Christ to them. A significant rise in interest in creation science began in 1980, with a four-day seminar held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the main speakers. This event drew an impressive crowd of scientists, professors and church leaders.
The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31 1981. The inauguration meeting was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo, and it received wide attention.
KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, which published its activities and also published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR and also some books on the subject of creationism, which were already published outside of Korea. KACR members taught throughout the country at universities and churches.
A KACR success was observed at the KAIST University in Seoul. There, students were so interested in the idea of creationism that they raised enough money and support to put up a small museum on campus with creationist fossil models and other exhibits.
In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, that covers topics related to creation science, and it has sponsored a series of talks by ICR staff. It also has local branches that hold seminars and present talks to children in schools and other community groups.

In the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts and other foreign fashion elements. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by rock and roll and jazz. During this period the samulnori, or the masked dance-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the beat of shaman drummers as well as other instruments.
The economic crisis has formed Korea's new paradigm of development. The main challenge for the new regime is the balance between state-led economic policies as well as market-based ones. It also requires altering incentives, monitoring, or discipline schemes that have created the system prior to the crisis. These issues are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4.
