Evolution Korea

Up until recently, the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to get rid of textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one example of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their environments and this can lead to changes in genes or even complete genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process that allows people with advantages survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. Over time, this differential reproduction could lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The word "evolution", which comes from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that species are evolving into other species in an orderly and predictable manner.

Scientists are studying evolution to make practical discoveries such as the development of new medicines or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve animal and plants species, mostly to benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a deep faith in God and want to understand how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists are generally divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or 에볼루션게이밍 old earth creationists.

These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. However, some researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the United States.

The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. This led to an interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 7 and 8 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
