World of Warcraft Item Upgrade and Set Bonuses

Set Bonuses are associated with each piece of equipment that is part of a Set. You can determine which ones are available by hovering over the item and examining the tooltip near the bottom. Set Bonuses are displayed in a box that has a red border.

Certain Set Bonuses are only available to a specific piece of equipment. For instance, if equip the full Phantom Armor set you will receive +8 defense (compared to the standard +3 defense that comes with the majority of gear).
