WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boosts in specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of the item by +3. A random additional substat is also added to each upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees more value in trade as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variance (like the eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less useful for the latter due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item level upgrade upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. However, the item that is used for the upgrade items will remain in use for a long time and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item, but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item upgrader kit will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapons, armor, tools and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased through NPCs who sell upgrades to item owners for a variety of currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will show the item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the item slot, and the current item level. For example weapons are more expensive than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of the Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items which include the main island and item level upgrade a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining a new recipe. The upgrade discount increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no item upgrader available at the start of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades are acquired via various methods that are both an improvement and a drawback.

This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all of their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one use, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. It's best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the best gear you can locate, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, that will be able to avail the discount for all accounts when all slots are full of high-quality equipment.
