Evolution Korea

South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist impulses. It's still better than expected.

The country is searching for an entirely new model of development. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for the ancestors as and gender-specific family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. There are indications of a secularist cultural trend that is emerging.

Origins

In the prehistoric era the ancestors of the modern Koreans lived by hunting and gathering wild food. Then around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate crops including millet and beans. They also raised livestock, and made furs. These people formed tribal states in succession in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron ones. The Korean peninsula was inhabited from Neolithic times to. The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged, and the three kingdoms began to cooperate in order to expand their territory. Silla with the help of the Chinese eventually conquered and united the peninsula in 935.

As Korea enters the post-crisis era its development model is in flux. The people who are awed by the enormous cost of the old systems advocate a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital, labor and markets for products. On the other hand those who support the old system want to keep it in place by leveraging nationalist sentiments and exaggerating fears of job loss.

Policy and academic analysts are starkly divided as to the extent to these two developments are driving Koreas evolution towards a new model of economic governance. This article assesses the latest developments by analyzing five phases of the country's political evolution including democratic illiberalism (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and democratic participation (2002 to the present). This article also identifies the key factors that are driving these developments.

Creationism in Korea

It also translated film strips and slides from ICR as well as a few books on creationism which were already published outside of Korea. A KACR success was observed at KAIST University in Seoul. There, students were so interested in creationism that they raised the funds and support to put up an on-campus museum featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine, CREATION. The magazine covers subjects that pertain to the science of creation. It also sponsored a series lectures by ICR staff. It has also organized local branches, which hold seminars and provide talks to schoolchildren and other community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the latter part of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt an increasingly Westernized lifestyle.
