How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
